Photo taken by Maxine Gordon
Location: Nelson Family Farm in Zionville, NC

"I am a photographer who thoroughly enjoys nature photography and especially the beauty of Western North Carolina and the High Country.  Another area interest is to photograph old barns, abandoned houses, old cars and trucks.  I believe each has a story to tell about days gone by."

"Caterpillar" tunnels at Against the Grain Farm
Photo taken by Jonathan "Jay" Wild
Location: Against the Grain Farm in Zionville, NC

"These "caterpillar" tunnels illustrate the efforts organic farmers must go through to protect crops like peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes from fungal diseases during the kind of rainfall we have had this season.  Holly Whitesides and her husband Andy Bryant are outstanding examples of the work that women (and their partners)  in agriculture are doing on a day to day basis to provide us with healthy, safe. and sustainable food including grain and seeds.  There is lots to be learned at Against the Grain farm that can be used by all of us (both home and professional gardeners)."

Chèvrerie
Photo taken by Meira Shuman
Location: WIld Pilgrim Farmstead in Lenoir, NC

Since she was a little girl, Meira has loved animals. Her latest animal obsession has been goats, so she was particularly excited to volunteer with the High Country Farm Tour at the Wild Pilgrim Farmstead. At this farm there were goats aplenty, as well as dogs, chickens, and an array of colorful vegetables. Meira has recently graduated from AppState with a Master's in Counseling. Some day she will establish her own therapeutic farm community, but until then she plans to travel around the country while rock climbing, hiking, writing, and taking photos.
