2) Old Orchard Creek Farm

Old Orchard Creek is a U-Pick blueberry farm located in northwest Ashe County. The farm and many of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, being settled in around 1890. Old Orchard has approximately 4,000 High Bush blueberry bushes and around 300 heirloom apple trees. The farm is also permanently protected by a Conservation Easement with Blue Ridge Conservancy.

3) Highland Meadows Cattle Co.

We are a family owned and operated farm that raises Scottish Highland Cattle for meat sales and breeding stock. Our cattle enjoy free-range on our high elevation pastures and drink from clear clean mountain water. Simply known as Highland Cattle, these animals are instantly recognized by their sweeping horns and flowing hair. Highland cattle have been long known for the quality beef they produce which we sell by the cut, half or whole.

4) Faith Mountain Farm

The Faith Mountain Farm family is celebrating 10 years of farm living this year!  We invite you to come share a few minutes with us as you walk around our gardens along the creek bottom and hear about the diverse endeavors of our farm from the children who do the work. You can also sample our honey varieties, watch the honey bees working, and learn about beekeeping.

Directions: From New Market center in Boone: Take 194 north to Todd. Take a left onto Three Top Road and travel until it ends at Hwy. 88. Take a right onto 88.  Travel 1.2 miles and take left onto Big Laurel. Farm is on the left in 0.4 miles.

5) Hoof n' Feather Farm

Hoof n' Feather Farm is a small family farm that focuses on gardening, goat herding, and fowl. Visitors will be guided around the farm to learn about sustainable gardening, animal husbandry, tiny house living, and using reclaimed and natural building materials. Farm goods will be available for purchase and guests can try culinary tastings during their visit.

Directions: (from West Jefferson) Head north on 194 for 1.5 miles then continue on 88 west for 8.3 miles. You will pass through Warrensville and eventually see the north side of Three Top Mountain, with its three distinct peaks. At the base of the mountain and in a bend of 88, turn left onto Ed Little Rd. You will see an antique store, Picker's Porch, before the turn. Go up the hill 0.3 miles and turn left onto Hardin Gilley Rd. Continue up the hill for 0.5 miles until you see signs for our farm and parking.

6) Waterfall Farm

On the high slopes of Three Top Mountain, Waterfall Farm is the southernmost maple syrup producer in the country! Come visit the sugar house and learn about the processes of maple syrup production. Also enjoy west and north facing views of Tennessee and Virginia from our fish ponds where we raise rainbow trout.

7) Heritage Homestead

Heritage Homestead is a working goat dairy. Visitors will be able to interact with the goats,  taste our cheese, and view the milking parlor, cheese processing room, black-smith shop, and studio where broom-making, basket weaving, and hide tanning take place.

8) Little Peak Creek Farm

Little Peak Creek Farm is located just outside Jefferson and is comprised of 68 acres of pasture land and hiking trails visitors are encouraged to explore. Lisa and her husband Stephen have been long time gardeners and animal owners and offer a cabin rental for their visitors to come experience the farm way of life. Lisa is a retired elementary teacher and loves to share her knowledge with children and adults and encourages guests to help in the chores around the farm to learn the ins and outs of farm living.

9) ASU Sustainable Development Farm
608 Watertank Rd. Fleetwood, NC 28626

The Sustainable Development Teaching and Research Farm is a student and faculty-powered farm that offers students an opportunity to immerse themselves into a living lab. The goal of the SD Farm is to become a multi-purpose, integrated farming system that produces healthy food, fiber, and other raw materials that can be cultivated successfully on a small scale. Come see our multitude of produce production, livestock, and experiments in progress.

Products available for purchasing during the tour: Veggies, flowers, eggs, and meat
Directions: (from 421) Head north on hwy 221 toward W Jefferson. After 6.1 miles, look for Watertank Rd. on your right. The first gravel driveway on the right will be 0.5 miles down the road. We are located at the end of the driveway. Please park along the driveway before entering the red gate.

10) Blackburn Community Garden
3458 Todd Railroad Grade Rd. Todd, NC 28684

 This tour features not only beautiful gardens and animals, but a unique partnership between a longtime homesteader and a local organization. Visitors have the chance to witness how Blackburn Community Outreach is bringing vitality to historic Todd through ecological gardening and distributing produce to food­insecure families. A brief walk or drive through Todd brings you to Mathomhouse Farm, where Lyn Soeder has offered land for BCO's efforts, raised goats, chickens, bees, and gardened for over 30 years.

Directions: (from Boone) Drive north on Hwy 194 for 11 miles. Turn right on Todd Railroad Grade Road (Just after the Todd Volunteer Fire Dept). After about .2 miles turn left into the parking lot of Blackburn's Chapel UMC. To get to Mathomhouse from BCUMC, turn left to continue on RR Grade Rd. for .5 mile (or a 10 minute walk). Pass through "downtown" and the intersection with Big Hill Road at the river bend. M.H. is the first home on the left.
